Cooperative Herd Management Training
The Centre of Excellence for Livestock Innovation and Business (CoELIB) conducted cooperative herd management training
using Uniform Agri Herd management software on 18th December 2015 at the Centre. The focus of the training was to instill a record keeping culture and train the cooperatives to manage the cows of its members by central registration of all the cows.
The participants including six cooperative representatives, lecturers, Kenya Dairy Board and International Organizations staff attended. Five presentations were made. “Cooperative Herd Management” introduced participants to the interactions of a cooperative and the farmer as different entities. “Pareto Principle in dairy extension” focused on Lead Milk Suppliers (LMS) training and need to focus training on these groups so that they train the rest of the members. “Uniform Agri software” demonstration was done, to familiarize participants with the current trends of dairy record keeping, data analysis and using farm technical data to make decisions. “Virtual grouping of cows” focused on how the cooperatives can use one software at the office to manage all the cows that supply milk to the same cooperative. The last presentation was “Animal recording” which focused on the current trends, procedures of animal recording in Kenya.
